Has anyone heard about the Topman MC 80-300mm f/5.6 Macro? Actually, if you look closely at the barrel markings, the longest focal is marked 305mm. What particularly struck me about this zoom lens was that it had a long range from 80mm to 300mm and it's highly unusual to see that range in a constant max aperture of f/5.6!

While tinkering with this lens, I discovered that like Tamron or Sigma, it has its own interchangeable mount system, although obscure and unheard of. This system is quite difficult to do, which I guess was the reason it never became popular. The adapter was in OM mount, but due to the lack of availability, decided to make my own lens conversion to Nikon F mount instead. The aperture ring was permanently fixed to f/5.6 so we cannot stop it down.

You press that button on the left, beside the red dot.
This will release the adapter, then you
turn counter clockwise to remove the adapter.

Who is Topman anyway? Only very little can be found on the web about them, but they came into business in 1980 (bought Miranda) and also made lenses for Hanimex. Of the very few reviews, Topman lenses were generally regarded as top notch in build and image quality.

I do agree that this lens made high quality images -- colors are saturated, there is good resolution, and it can also do closeups (not a true macro). It does have some limitations such as the maximum aperture of f/5.6 so it is more suited for daytime outdoor shooting. It won't produce much bokeh either, if you're thinking of using this for shooting portraiture with blurry backgrounds.

All shots at f/5.6

All photos are raw/unedited.

Unfortunately, it was rainy season
when I shot the samples and
mostly on a dim cloudy day.

There was a chipped glass on the edge of the front element.
It may have an effect from 200mm and longer.
